The Crazies Are Out

Hide your kids...hide your wife...

Please note: When dealing with a schizophrenic patient, don't assume that when he/she says something under his/her breath that he/she is talking to you.

I made the mistake of replying to my patient, "I'm sorry, I didn't understand what you said." My patient then slowly and eerily turns her head towards me and says, "HE'S GOING TO KILL YOU TOO."

My visit did not last much longer.

Own the Stress

We all know that stress is a big part of home health. We, home health employees, are a slave to our work. Its not the kind of job that we can forget about when we leave the office. Since most of us are rarely in the office, we tend to take our work home with us. Our patients are on our mind 24 hours a day. This then affects our life at home. Relationships are tested, chores are forgotten, and someone ate ALL the food in the house. We devote our entire life to our work.

I have something to tell ya...

Sometimes its okay to be selfish...not all the time...but sometimes it's about you. When you leave your last of 10 patients for the day, find a way to take an hour for yourself. Sitting in traffic for an hour does not count. I have heard from other coworkers that they like to go to the gym. Though I think that running on a treadmill is painful, boring, and monotonous, some say it does the trick. I personally like to scrapbook and do other crafts. Reading a good book is good too.

I don't have to tell you that being extremely stressed can lead to a life of cardiovascular and psychiatric problems. Neither of these sound appealing. So, do yourself a favor and own the stress, don't let it own you. Grab stress by the pair and do something for yourself. Remember...

SOMETIMES IT'S ABOUT YOU!
